Realtors: Why use Referral Marketing
17 August 2018
Even the most successful agents can have days (or days) when they feel sluggish, down or otherwise unmotivated. When that happens, it can negatively impact every aspect of your business, from doing prospecting activities to generating real estate leads to meeting with new clients.
So, when you’re facing the day while feeling less-than-inspired, what can you do to change that? The good news is, plenty! Here are just a few motivation hacks that can work well for real estate agents.
Hack #1: Do something.
A common misconception about motivation is that it’s something you do before taking action. For example, listening to a motivational podcast. But, according to author James Clear, “One of the most surprising things about motivation is that it often comes after starting a new behaviour, not before.”
You’ve probably noticed this yourself.
For example, you may not have felt particularly motivated to do some prospecting in a neighbourhood where you’ve recently sold a home. In fact, you might have procrastinated before knocking on that first door. But once you got started, the motivation kicked in. You found your groove and kept going.
So, when feeling unmotivated, do something. It doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. It could be updating your real estate CRM, sending out your real estate direct mail newsletter, or calling a few past clients to catch up.
Motivation is far more likely to improve when you’re in action mode than it is when you’re just sitting and thinking.
Hack #2: Review your goals
Why are goals so motivating? It’s because, by setting them, you make your future more interesting than your past. So interesting, in fact, that you feel inspired to work hard to make that future happen.
That, in itself, is motivating!
But what can give you even more oomph — and something you can do anytime — is to review your goals.
For example, say you’re having a bad day. You’re finding it difficult to work up the energy to do what you need to do. Taking a look at your goals and, especially, the progress you’ve made so far, can give you an almost instant pick-me-up.
Hack #3: Make a “progress leap”.
Another way to boost your motivation is to take a big step toward in achieving one of your goals or objectives. That can really help pull you out of a rut because you’re taking what experts call a “progress leap”. In other words, a big step forward.
Say, for example, your goal is to generate more real estate agent leads. There’s a real estate geographic farm you’ve identified that might be a winner for you, but you’ve yet to jump into working it in a major way. To make a “progress leap” you could sign up for a good geographic farming system, that consistently keeps you top-of-mind with homeowners in the area. Doing that today would be a big step forward — with the side effect of also being very motivating.
